Wilfred Bouma is an international footballer who was born on June 15, 1978 in Helmond, the Netherlands. He got married in June 2007 and lives with his wife and children in Streetly in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall.
Wilfred Bouma represented the Dutch national team at the international level and made his debut on September 2, 2000 in a match against the Republic of Ireland at the 2002 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and helped his side draw the match 2-2. Wilfred Bouma appeared four times at Euro 2004 and netted his first international goal against Czech Republic in the group stage of the tournament. In October that year, he scored his second international goal against Macedonia in a match, which ended in a 2-2 draw. As of July 2008, Wilfred Bouma has capped 35 times for Netherlands and has two goals to his credit.
Wilfred Bouma started his football career with the amateur club SV Rood-Wit ’62 and later joined PSV Eindhoven in 1994 after signing a youth contract. His head-coach, Aad de Mos, gave him his professional debut against Willem II on October 26, 1994. Wilfred Bouma was loaned out to MVV Maastricht in 1996 and he went on to score seven goals in 18 games in the Eerste Divisie. The following season he scored six goals in 33 games for MVV Maastricht and helped it progress to the Eredividie. He was then loaned out to Fortuna Sittard in 1998-1999 and his impressive performance there earned him a place in the PSV squad again the following season.
Wilfred Bouma, due to his quick pace and ability to pass directly, was positioned as a left winger and a forward along with Arnold Bruggink, and occassionally, with Ruud van Nistelrooy. During his stint at PSV Eindhoven, he was part of the team that emerged as the Champions in the Dutch League in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006.
On August 30, 2005, Wilfred Bouma signed to play for Aston Villa for a transfer fee of £3.5million. However, he couldn’t play much during the 2005-2006 season at Villa Park due to injuries. He came back from a hamstring injury in the next season and replaced stand-in left-back Gareth Barry. With his solid performance he soon established himself as the first-choice left-back for the Aston Villa team.
